Not every bathroom needs — or has the budget for — a full frameless enclosure, and that’s fine. Framed and semi-frameless shower doors are a proven, budget-friendly option that still looks clean and modern, and they remain one of our most popular installs for guest bathrooms, rental properties, and homeowners prioritizing value. Prime Glass has custom-measured and installed both framed and semi-frameless doors across Venice, Sarasota, and the Gulf Coast since 1991.

Framed vs. Semi-Frameless: What’s the Difference
Framed shower doors have a full metal frame around every edge of the glass, including where panels meet. This is the most budget-friendly configuration, and the frame adds structural support, which allows for thinner, less expensive glass.
Semi-frameless shower doors use a partial frame — typically just at the hinge side and where the door meets the wall — with thicker glass than a fully framed door. This gives you a cleaner look than a framed door at a lower cost than a full frameless enclosure, which is why it’s often the middle-ground choice for homeowners balancing budget and appearance.
Both are excellent, durable choices — the right one depends on your bathroom, your budget, and how much of the frameless look you want without the frameless price.
Why Homeowners Choose Framed or Semi-Frameless
- Lower cost than a comparable frameless enclosure
- Strong structural support from the frame, well suited to swing doors and inline panel configurations
- Faster fabrication in many cases, since the frame accommodates standard glass thicknesses
- A clean, functional look that still elevates a dated shower
Configuration Options
Swing door with fixed inline panel — our most popular framed/semi-frameless configuration, giving you a full-width shower opening with a functional door.
Sliding (bypass) doors — two overlapping panels that slide on a track, a good fit for tub-to-shower combinations.
Neo-angle framed enclosures — for corner showers on a budget.
Glass, Hardware, and Thickness Options
Glass thickness: Typically 3/16″–1/4″ for framed doors, and up to 5/16″–3/8″ for semi-frameless configurations.
Glass type: Clear tempered glass is standard; frosted or textured options are available for added privacy.
Frame and hardware finishes: Chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, and white or bronze framing to match your bathroom’s existing fixtures and trim.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a framed or semi-frameless shower door cost? Framed doors typically run less than frameless options — often in the $800–$2,000 installed range depending on size and configuration, with semi-frameless configurations landing between framed and full frameless pricing. A free in-home estimate gives you an exact number.
Is a semi-frameless door harder to clean than fully frameless? It’s slightly more involved than fully frameless because of the partial frame, but far easier to maintain than an older framed door with a full track system.
Can a framed door be upgraded to frameless later? Generally no — framed, semi-frameless, and frameless doors use different structural approaches, so switching later means a new installation rather than a modification.
Which option is right for a guest bathroom vs. primary bathroom? Many homeowners choose framed or semi-frameless for secondary and guest bathrooms to manage cost, while reserving a full frameless enclosure for the primary bath. We’ll talk through what makes sense for your home during the estimate.
