One of the first things homeowners notice after switching to a frameless shower enclosure is how much easier it is to keep clean — especially compared to a framed door with its metal tracks and rubber gaskets.

But “easier” still requires a little consistency. In Southwest Florida, we deal with hard water, high humidity, and plenty of mineral buildup that can take the shine off even the most beautiful glass if it’s ignored. The good news is that with the right habits and the right products, maintaining your frameless enclosure is genuinely simple.

Here’s what we tell every homeowner after an installation.

1. Build the Daily Squeegee Habit

This is the single most effective thing you can do for your frameless shower glass, and it takes about 30 seconds.

After every shower, run a squeegee across the glass panels — top to bottom, overlapping your strokes slightly. This removes the water before it has a chance to evaporate and leave mineral deposits behind. In Florida, where our tap water is notoriously hard, water spots form fast. A squeegee eliminates the problem before it starts.

Keep the squeegee on a hook inside the shower so it’s always at hand. It becomes second nature within a week.

2. Weekly Cleaning: What to Use and What to Avoid

Once a week, give the glass a proper cleaning. Here’s what works — and what doesn’t.

Avoid:

For stubborn hard water buildup along the bottom edge of your panels, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applied with a soft cloth works well. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping off.

3. Florida Hard Water: Stay Ahead of the Buildup

If you’ve lived in the Venice or Sarasota area for any length of time, you know the water here is mineral-rich. Calcium and magnesium deposits — the white or cloudy film that forms on glass and fixtures — are one of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners.

The squeegee habit is your best defense. But if you’re starting from a point where the glass already has significant buildup, a commercial lime and calcium remover (products like CLR, used carefully and rinsed thoroughly) can help reset things. After that, regular maintenance keeps it from coming back.

Some homeowners in our area also install a simple water softener or shower filter — especially in homes on well water — which dramatically reduces the problem at the source.

4. Keep the Hardware Clean and Dry

The hinges, handles, and channels on your frameless enclosure deserve attention too. After cleaning the glass, wipe down the hardware with a soft dry cloth. Most quality hardware finishes — brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black — hold up well in bathroom environments, but standing water and soap residue can dull them over time.

Avoid abrasive products on any coated hardware finishes. A damp microfiber cloth is usually all you need.

5. Watch the Silicone Seals

Frameless enclosures use silicone caulk at the seams — along the glass-to-wall edges and along the bottom — to create the watertight seal that keeps water in the shower where it belongs. This silicone is durable, but it’s not permanent.

Inspect the silicone every six to twelve months. Signs that it’s time for a refresh: the caulk is pulling away from the glass or wall, there’s visible mold that won’t wipe off, or you notice water seeping out of the enclosure where it didn’t before.

Resealing a frameless shower is a straightforward job. Remove the old silicone, clean and dry the surface thoroughly, and apply fresh 100% silicone caulk (not latex or acrylic caulk, which don’t hold up in wet environments). If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, any reputable glass company — including our team — can take care of it quickly.
